The Essential Teachings of Confucius
“China is an ancient civilization. Confucius candidly said: "I transmit but do not create. Being fond of the truth, I am an admirer of antiquity." He curated, organized, and taught ancient texts:
The I Ching (Book of Changes) — divination and the philosophy of change and balance; Confucius studied it so intensely he wore out his copy three times
The Book of Songs (Shijing) — 305 poems and folk songs; he used them to teach morality, emotion, and culture
The Book of Rites (Liji) — proper conduct in relationships, ceremonies, and governance
The Book of Documents (Shujing) — historical records used to teach virtuous leadership
How To Kill Your Husband and Other Wifely Duties
You can accomplish the sinister deed and be praised for it. He’ll be pushing up daisies and your family, friends and neighbors will want to give you “Wife of the Year” awards accompanied by compliments like “You denied that man nothing.” “You loved that man to death”. “You were such a wonderful and devoted wife.” No police will call and there will be no embarrassing court trial.
Children Should Know Their Grand-parents
Having been rained by a blessed grand-mother and being the grand-father of six amazing children, I take my responsibilities seriously and enjoy my time with them enormously. Until you have held a grandchild in your arms, you don’t really know what joy is. You see, if I had known they were going to be so much fun, I would have had them thirst. If we are ever going to make a dent in our social problems with young people, we will need grand-parents to stick around for a few more years but also to be more involved. Unfortunately, cardiovascular related diseases (while preventable on the most part) are the number one killer of grandparents. So, there are practical things to be done to prevent and survive cardiovascular disease. Children deserve to know their grand-parents.
The Pursuit of Happiness
When Thomas Jefferson wrote the founding document of our nation, he didn't promise us happiness. He promised us the pursuit of it. Maybe that distinction — so easy to overlook — is the whole point. We live in a culture that has confused the pursuit with the prize. We accumulate. We compete. We post our highlights on social media and measure our worth in likes. There is an old joke that says "whoever dies with the most toys wins." But wins what, exactly? A well-furnished grave? As another old saying reminds us, "I have never seen a U-Haul trailer behind a hearse." Or, as 1 Timothy 6:7 puts it plainly: "For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it." So, let's slow down and ask the question seriously: What is happiness, and are we even looking for it in the right places?
